The guitar from Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is now on view in Exposition Park, where the California African American Museum has opened Sounds That Summon, a free exhibition about the film’s Club Juke sequence that runs through March 14, 2027.

The California African American Museum, a state museum chartered in 1977 that sits beside the California Science Center, says the show centers on the guitar used by Sammie “Preacher Boy” Moore, the young bluesman Miles Caton plays in the film. Costumes, objects and archival material from the production surround it. Time Out reported that the costumes worn by Smoke and Stack, the brothers Michael B. Jordan plays in dual roles, and the original Club Juke sign are part of it.

What the Exhibition Shows

The Club Juke scene is the night in the film when music opens a portal through time, “from traditional African ritual to present-day street dance,” in the museum’s words. CAAM says the objects consider “how Black music carries memory, movement, style, and spirit across generations.”

Curator Imani Y. Haynes organized the show with the Warner Bros. Archives, Fangoria reported. It moves through three themes on sound, movement and the worlds music builds, with sections titled Music Makes Movement and Music Makes Worlds. Time Out describes a section tracing Black music and culture from the Mississippi Delta to California during the Great Migration. The visit ends in Sounds That Carry Us, an interactive space where visitors share a song or sound that gives them hope or community.

The show joins a busy stretch for the park, which welcomed the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in September. Coogler and the artist Mary Corse were the honorees at LACMA’s 2025 gala, the event Velvet previewed this year with the 2026 Art and Film Gala.

How the Objects Line Up With the Oscars

Sinners earned 16 nominations at the 98th Academy Awards and won four, according to the Academy’s ceremony page. By Velvet Hollywood’s own reading of that list against the objects the museum and Time Out describe, the craft behind most of what is on view was recognized.
