Dune Meets the Desert Floor, LACMA Honors Villeneuve and Celmins
Leonardo DiCaprio and Eva Chow co-chair the 15th Art+Film Gala on November 7, with Gucci presenting again.
Wilshire puts on black tie on Saturday, November 7, when LACMA holds its 15th Art+Film Gala and honors the artist Vija Celmins and the filmmaker Denis Villeneuve.
Eva Chow, a LACMA trustee, and Leonardo DiCaprio co-chair the night for the fifteenth year in a row, and Gucci returns as presenting sponsor, a role it has held since the gala began in 2011.
The pairing has a pleasing symmetry. Celmins, born in 1938, is known for what LACMA calls “meticulous renderings of natural imagery, including ocean waves, desert floors, and night skies,” and she received a MacArthur Fellowship in 1997. Villeneuve has spent recent years making the most famous desert in cinema. The first Dune film won six Academy Awards, and its sequel passed $700 million worldwide.
The third installment is due in December, and Villeneuve is also directing the next James Bond film for Amazon MGM Studios.
Past honorees include David Hockney, Ed Ruscha, John Baldessari, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese. Proceeds support LACMA’s film programming and its wider work, from exhibitions and acquisitions to education.
