Jeff Garlin has been carrying a camera into rooms most people never see. The comedian, who played Jeff Greene on Curb Your Enthusiasm, has collected his favorite pictures of colleagues and friends in his debut photography book, Best Seat in the House, and he will sign it twice in West Hollywood next month, LAist reported on Wednesday.

Two Signings in West Hollywood

The first stop is Book Soup on Sunset Boulevard on Monday, November 2, at 7 p.m. It is a ticketed in-store event, and the store says an Eventbrite ticket is required to get into the signing line. Tickets bought through a third party will not be considered valid, and memorabilia should be left at home.

The second signing is at the Leica Gallery, also in West Hollywood, on Sunday, November 15. LAist and Garlin’s own site both list the date, though neither gives a start time.

Inside the Book

Rizzoli published the book on September 15. It runs 176 pages, and its full subtitle is Moments No One Asked Me to Capture...But I Did Anyway. The publisher promises “candid, never-before-seen photographs” with personal stories from life onstage and off, including images from the Curb Your Enthusiasm series finale and portraits of Larry David, Mel Brooks, Brad Pitt, Jerry Seinfeld, Bob Odenkirk, Christie Brinkley, Carl Reiner, Sarah Silverman and Jerrod Carmichael.

“For years, Garlin has quietly documented backstage life and private gatherings with comedy’s biggest stars and Hollywood’s most familiar faces,” the book’s description reads. Odenkirk wrote the foreword, and the anecdotes are told in conversation with podcast host Sam Fragoso. Garlin’s own site calls the book a love letter to comedy and its creators.

The camera is not a new habit. His photo show, Big Bowl of Wonderful, has been exhibited in Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago and Boston, according to his website, which also sells limited edition, hand signed silver gelatin prints of his work, among them a picture of Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks.

Garlin talked through the pictures on AirTalk, LAist’s daily news show, covering his years playing Jeff Greene, stories about some of the biggest names in comedy and his feelings about analog and digital cameras.

On the Road, Then Home

The book tour stopped at the Chicago Humanities Festival on October 4, and it continues at Barnes & Noble on Fifth Avenue in New York on October 21, the Leica Store and Gallery in New York on October 22, Bookends in Ridgewood, New Jersey, on October 24 and the Doylestown Bookshop in Pennsylvania on October 27 before the Los Angeles dates. After West Hollywood it heads to the Miami Book Fair on November 17, then to Charleston, Atlanta and Winnetka, Illinois, his site shows.

Chicago is never far from the story. His Leica event listing in New York sums him up as a writer, producer, director, actor, stand-up comedian, photographer “and most importantly, Chicagoan!” His Netflix stand-up special, Our Man in Chicago, was filmed in his hometown. The publisher’s bio points to his decades on the stand-up stage and his roles as Jeff Greene and as Murray Goldberg on ABC’s The Goldbergs. His voice work includes the Captain in WALL-E and Buttercup the unicorn in Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4.

He has not been far from a Los Angeles stage this fall either. Eventbrite lists him at Flappers Comedy Club in Burbank on Saturday, October 17, and for a Sundays With Jeff Garlin night there on October 18. He is also on this month’s lineups for the Comedy Store’s Horribly Funny nights, covered in Tuesday Nights on the Strip, Tiffany Haddish Leads the Comedy Store’s Horribly Funny.
