“Built in 1914. Designed for Today.” The line on Hotel Clark’s website undersells the middle part. The Hill Street landmark soft-opened on September 29, closing what Propmodo called a 30-year adaptive reuse saga.

Eli P. Clark, a railway entrepreneur in early Los Angeles, built it with 555 rooms. It later became low-rent apartments, and in 1988 the People’s Republic of China bought it for a planned business and cultural center that was later abandoned. The Chetrit Group began remodeling it as a hotel in 2012.

It reopens with 348 guest rooms and more than 11,000 square feet of meeting and event space at 426 S. Hill Street, near Pershing Square. Food and drink come through Votana, serving Mediterranean-inspired California cuisine, the Clubhouse sports pub, a lobby bar and a heated outdoor pool with poolside cocktails.

Adrienne Craig is general manager and Gio Koletty is executive chef. Propmodo reports rates starting at $207 for a standard room and $508 for a one-bedroom suite, and Votana throws its grand opening party on October 15.
