In 2001 Peaches handed the microphone to strangers at the Fonda Theatre and let them sing her biggest song. On Saturday she walks back into the same room, in the month of its 100th birthday, to headline one night of its centennial series.

The Los Angeles Daily News reported that Peaches plays the Fonda on Saturday, October 17, joined by Gelli Haha, an artist she picked after the two met at a small backyard gathering in Los Angeles.

A Room She Knows

The Fonda was a stop on her first headlining tour in 2001, when she played the backing track for her breakout song and invited audience members to sing it. “The Fonda performance of that is the beginning and the end,” she told the Daily News. “That was the best one of them all.” She has returned many times since, including two nights on an anniversary tour for her 2000 debut, The Teaches of Peaches.

She used to climb into the theater’s side boxes during shows and set up lights there. “It’s like an old theater that could be haunted, you know?” she said. Her album No Lube So Rude came out earlier this year, her first full-length in more than a decade, the paper reported.

One Hundred Years on Hollywood Boulevard

The building opened in 1926 as Carter De Haven’s Music Box, a stage house that later became the Pix movie theater before returning to live music, according to the venue. The Daily News listed a nine show anniversary series for October, from Suicidal Tendencies on October 1 to Animal Collective on October 24. Earlier in the run, Father John Misty played a solo set and Remi Wolf held her release party.

Peaches used the moment to speak up for rooms like this one. “Places are being bought up, sanitized, monetized, capitalized without giving space for communities to express themselves, which is the only reason why we got to where we are now,” she told the paper.

She is not planning a separate production for the centennial, but she wants the night to count. “I want them to have an experience,” she said.

Practical Details

Saturday, October 17, at the Fonda Theatre, 6126 Hollywood Boulevard. Tickets for the anniversary shows are on the Fonda’s website.
