Crockett and Tubbs in Westwood, Michael Mann Premieres a New Miami Vice
Twenty years on, the director will bring a recut, restored 4K version of his 2006 thriller to Beyond Fest on October 3.
On Saturday, October 3, at 7 p.m., Michael Mann will unveil a new cut of Miami Vice at the Directors Village in Westwood. Beyond Fest bills the night as the film’s 20th anniversary and the world premiere of Mann’s new cut in 4K, and Mann will stay for a Q&A after the screening.
The 2006 film stars Colin Farrell as Sonny Crockett and Jamie Foxx as Ricardo Tubbs, with Gong Li, Naomie Harris, Ciarán Hinds and John Ortiz. Mann has said the released version never got the ending he envisioned. Production problems cost him roughly three planned weeks in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, where he had imagined an elaborate climax, and the finale was rewritten for Miami. “It doesn’t have its proper ending,” Mann said in 2023.
According to its home video announcement, the Director’s Final Cut draws on the theatrical master, Mann’s first director’s cut and previously unused dailies. Select scenes are refined, others are reordered, and the ending has been significantly recut from unused footage to reflect the one Mann preferred. The announcement lists the new cut at 133 minutes, and a five-disc 4K UHD and Blu-ray collector’s edition is due December 15. The same announcement describes the Beyond Fest debut as playing to a sold-out crowd.
The room suits the occasion. The Directors Village, formerly the Fox Westwood Village Theater on Broxton Avenue, closed in 2024 and reopened this summer under the Village Directors Circle, a collective of filmmakers led by Jason Reitman, and the American Cinematheque, ahead of a $25 million restoration aimed at 2027. “We often like to think of movie theaters as churches. If so, the Village is a cathedral, and with the American Cinematheque, we found our congregation,” Reitman said when the partnership was announced.
Beyond Fest tickets are sold through the American Cinematheque. Anyone shut out of Westwood can take the new cut home in December.
