Home Songs Under the Shell, Mac DeMarco Headlines the Hollywood Bowl
The Canadian songwriter who made his album Guitar at home in Los Angeles plays the Hollywood Bowl on Friday night.

Mac DeMarco wrote “Home” in Los Angeles. On Friday night he carries it up Highland Avenue to the Hollywood Bowl, where the Canadian songwriter headlines a show built around his 2025 album Guitar along with songs from across his catalog, according to the Hollywood Bowl. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the music starts at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 9.
For a musician long filed under slacker pop, it is a big room and a big night. Grimy Goods, the Los Angeles music site, summed up the climb in its weekly concert guide. “His woozy, lo-fi guitar sound has carried him from DIY house shows to amphitheater stages since the early 2010s.”
A Record Made at Home
Live Nation announced the Bowl date in February, describing a special night of live renditions of songs from Guitar and earlier releases. The announcement noted that DeMarco’s 2025 tour of North America, Europe and the UK sold out entirely, and tickets went on sale to the general public on February 13.
Guitar is the reason for the trip. DeMarco announced the album in June 2025 and released it that August on his own imprint, Mac’s Record Label, Rolling Stone reported. The magazine noted that he recorded the entire album in Los Angeles, his current home. His previous full length release had been Five Easy Hot Dogs, an instrumental album, in 2023.
The lead single was “Home,” and the singer was specific about where it came from. He called it “a song I wrote at my home in Los Angeles about what home means to me,” in a statement quoted by Rolling Stone. The video went the other direction, with DeMarco paddling a canoe near his mother’s home in Canada between shots of geese.
The Bowl’s own description of the night leans on the same idea. It calls Salad Days, his 2014 album, the record that cemented his status in the indie scene, and says Guitar signals a return to his signature guitar and vocals style.
I think Guitar is as close to a true representation of where I’m at in my life today as I can manage to put to paper.
DeMarco first said that when he announced Guitar in June 2025, and Live Nation repeated the statement when it announced the Bowl date, along with a line that reads like a tour plan. “I’m happy to share this music and look forward to playing these songs in as many places as I’m able.”
Four Albums in One Morning
He has not been quiet since. On August 28, fans woke up to four new DeMarco albums on streaming services, Pitchfork reported. The titles are Dog on the Rock, Seven Off the Two, Seaplane Dog and The View From Tian Tan. Some listeners had already heard the music, because DeMarco handed out copies on CD-R during his most recent tour. The releases kept their scrappy origins, Pitchfork noted, with each song named after a seemingly random set of numbers.
Nobody knows yet how much of that material will surface on Friday. The Bowl promises songs from Guitar and the older catalog, and the rest will be up to DeMarco.
Smaller Rooms, Then the Bowl
The booking carries a small irony. In February, three days after the Bowl show was announced, NME asked DeMarco whether he was surprised to still be headlining festivals and big shows so far into his career. He said the goal with the new record and the new touring was “to downsize in a tasteful way,” and to “play nicer, smaller venues, and create a different environment.”
He admitted the plan had not always worked. Some of the booking, he told NME, had landed in smaller venues that were not very nice, and fans complained that they could not get a ticket and that the resale price was $400. “So we’re figuring it out,” he said.
Los Angeles has watched the figuring happen. When DeMarco opened his world tour at the Greek Theatre in Griffith Park in 2025, Grimy Goods found a crowd thick with high schoolers and a performer who danced as if he were alone in his bedroom rather than in what the reviewer called a 5,000 seat venue. At one point he told the crowd, “I said I wouldn’t play this damn thing anymore, but look at me now.”
The Bowl is a different kind of room. It is outdoors and tucked into the hills, not the “gigantic square box” with video screens and cameras that he told NME he did not want to play, and a canyon full of people singing back songs written in Los Angeles has its own kind of intimacy.
A Week of Headliners
DeMarco lands in the middle of a crowded stretch on Highland Avenue. Grimy Goods noted that nearly all of the week’s best concerts in Los Angeles are at the Bowl, with Hayley Williams, Empire of the Sun, DeMarco and Jack Johnson all headlining there. Johnson follows DeMarco with two nights on Saturday and Sunday, covered in Last Set of the Season, Jack Johnson Ends His SURFILMUSIC Tour at the Hollywood Bowl.
The rest of the city is busy on Friday too. LAist’s weekly guide lists ScHoolboy Q at the Hollywood Palladium and Blonde Redhead at the Bellwether on the same night, so the boulevard below the Bowl will be full long after the gates close.
The concert is presented by Live Nation and Hewitt Silva. The Bowl lists special house rules for the night, with no glass, cans, alcohol or controlled substances allowed on entry. Park and Ride and Bowl Shuttle tickets are sold separately through the venue, and the Bowl notes that programs, artists, dates, prices and availability are subject to change.
Bring a layer. The show runs after dark, and the songs about home will sound best with the city lights spread out behind the shell.
