Glenn Close has been nominated for eight Oscars and has never won one, a record she shares with Peter O’Toole for the most acting nominations without a win, Variety noted. On Sunday, November 15, in the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood, she finally gets a statuette.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present honorary Oscars to Close, the director Ridley Scott and the animator Floyd Norman at its 17th Governors Awards, a separate ceremony from the televised Oscars. The producers Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler, who founded Killer Films, will receive the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award.

“Throughout her extraordinary body of work, Glenn Close’s unparalleled emotional range has brought to life some of the most complex characters in cinema,” academy president Lynette Howell Taylor said when the honorees were announced in June. Close’s nominations began with her film debut in The World According to Garp and include The Big Chill, Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, The Wife and Hillbilly Elegy. Deadline counted three Emmys and two Tonys on her shelf.

Scott has been nominated for directing Thelma & Louise, Gladiator and Black Hawk Down, and for best picture as a producer of The Martian, but has never won. “Sir Ridley Scott is a true visionary whose decades-long legacy has left an immeasurable impact on global cinema and culture,” Howell Taylor said. He was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire in 2024, and his upcoming adaptation of the novel The Dog Stars stars Jacob Elordi and Josh Brolin.

Norman joined Walt Disney Animation Studios in 1956 and became its first Black animator. His first Disney feature was Sleeping Beauty, and his credits run from The Jungle Book and Robin Hood to Mulan, Toy Story 2 and Monsters, Inc.

Vachon and Koffler started Killer Films in New York in 1995 and built a catalog that includes Boys Don’t Cry, Far From Heaven, Carol, May December and Past Lives, which gave them a best picture nomination in 2024. Deadline reported that the Thalberg is now an Oscar statuette rather than the bust of the man it is named for.
