Rolex Night on Wilshire, the Academy Museum Honors Theron, Domingo and Carpenter
The sixth annual gala on October 17 hands out the Icon, Vantage and Luminary awards, with Spielberg among the co-chairs.
The sixth annual Academy Museum Gala, presented by Rolex, lands on October 17 at 6067 Wilshire Boulevard with an honoree list that rarely shares a sentence, Charlize Theron, Colman Domingo and John Carpenter.
Theron receives the Icon Award, which the museum says “celebrates an artist whose career has had a significant global impact.” Domingo receives the Vantage Award, which “honors an artist who is helping to challenge dominant narratives around cinema.” Carpenter takes the Luminary Award, for an artist whose “singular contributions have expanded the creative possibilities of filmmaking.”
Carpenter has already had a busy season in the building. On September 26, the day The Horror Show opened, he and Jamie Lee Curtis appeared at a screening of Halloween that launched the museum’s Carpenter retrospective.
Robert Rodriguez, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw co-chair the night, and the host committee includes Jessica Alba, Judd Apatow, Leslie Mann, Adrien Brody, Jon M. Chu, Kirsten Dunst, Kate Hudson, Rami Malek and Demi Moore.
“The Academy Museum Gala is a celebration of the artists and storytellers whose work continues to shape the cultural impact of cinema around the world,” said Amy Homma, the museum’s director and president. The evening raises support for exhibitions, screenings and education programs.
