A Career in One Night, Tom Cruise Will Receive the AFI Life Achievement Award at the Dolby Theatre
The American Film Institute named Tom Cruise its 52nd Life Achievement Award honoree, with a gala tribute at the Dolby Theatre on April 24, 2027.

Tom Cruise will receive the 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award at a gala tribute at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Saturday, April 24, 2027, the American Film Institute announced on Wednesday, October 21.
The award is the institute’s highest honor for a career in film, and it comes with one of Hollywood Boulevard’s longest nights. The American Film Institute, or AFI, is the nonprofit behind the AFI Conservatory film school and AFI Fest, which is on at the TCL Chinese Theatres this week. Its announcement says all proceeds from the tribute gala support AFI’s education and arts programs.
What AFI Said About Cruise
Kathleen Kennedy, who chairs the AFI Board of Trustees, made the case in the institute’s release.
“Tom Cruise is a global icon,” Kennedy said. “As an actor and producer, he brings an extraordinary commitment to everything he does. What I especially admire is his deep belief in movies and their ability to bring people together. That passion has made him an extraordinary ambassador for American film around the world. It is AFI’s honor to present him with the 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award.”
AFI’s biography describes a career spanning more than five decades, with films that have earned nearly $13 billion at the worldwide box office. It names Top Gun, Risky Business, Rain Man, A Few Good Men, Jerry Maguire, Minority Report, Collateral, Edge of Tomorrow and the Mission Impossible series among his films, and calls Top Gun Maverick the highest-grossing film of his career.
His Record With the Academy
Cruise is a four-time Oscar nominee. AFI lists Best Actor nominations for Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire, a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Magnolia, and a Best Picture nomination in 2022 as a producer of Top Gun Maverick. In 2025 he received an Honorary Oscar at the Academy’s Governors Awards, the institute notes.
TheWrap reported that his most recent film is the “divisive-but-respected satire ‘Digger’” from director Alejandro González Iñárritu. Velvet covered the Digger premiere in Westwood and the Ed Ruscha poster that LACMA made for the film. AFI adds that Cruise is set to return as Cole Trickle in Days of Thunder 2.
What the Award Is
AFI’s Board of Trustees created the Life Achievement Award in 1973, and it goes to one person a year. Under the board’s resolution, the honoree must be someone whose talent has fundamentally advanced the art of film, whose work has been recognized by scholars, critics, peers and the public, and whose films have stood the test of time.
John Ford was the first recipient. The recent honorees, from AFI’s list, are below.
| Year | Honoree | | --- | --- | | 2019 | Denzel Washington | | 2022 | Julie Andrews | | 2024 | Nicole Kidman | | 2025 | Francis Ford Coppola | | 2026 | Eddie Murphy | | 2027 | Tom Cruise |
Murphy received the 51st award on Saturday, April 18, at a gala tribute at the Dolby Theatre, according to AFI. That evening premiered on Netflix on May 31, 2026, with performers and presenters including Dave Chappelle, Kevin Hart, Martin Lawrence, Spike Lee, Chris Rock and Stevie Wonder. AFI has not yet named presenters or a broadcast partner for the Cruise tribute.
What It Means for Hollywood
The gala returns the tribute to the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, where Murphy was honored this spring. Cruise joins a list that runs from James Cagney and Bette Davis to Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep and George Clooney, AFI’s record shows.
The institute’s week is already busy. AFI Fest runs through Sunday, with Peter Berg’s The Mosquito Bowl premiering at the TCL Chinese tonight.
