Three Theaters, One Painter, Reggie Burrows Hodges Takes Over Los Angeles Museums on October 20
Hodges opens A Theater of Passions at the Getty Center, with companion shows at CAAM and Art + Practice the same day.

On Tuesday, October 20, three Los Angeles institutions open the same painter at once. Reggie Burrows Hodges, born in Compton in 1965, shows new work at the Getty Center, the California African American Museum and Art + Practice in Leimert Park.
The Getty Chapter
The Getty lists Reggie Burrows Hodges, A Theater of Passions, in the Museum East Pavilion, upper level, from October 20 to February 28, 2027. The museum describes a new series of paintings inspired by the father and daughter painters Orazio and Artemisia Gentileschi in the Getty’s collection. Hodges builds on the formal and thematic aspects of the 17th century Italian works, the Getty says, and draws out the violence, drama and theatricality in their biblical and mythological narratives. The show is presented in English and Spanish.
Admission is free with the Getty’s timed entry reservation. Reservations open six weeks ahead, and parking carries a fee.
Two More Stages
Art + Practice describes the three shows as one presentation. At CAAM, A Theater of Miracles looks at how Old Master painting has shaped his practice, and Jacopo Bassano’s The Miracle of the Quail (1554) from the Getty’s collection hangs alongside his work there. At Art + Practice, A Theater of Dreams draws on his memories of growing up in Compton, the legacy of Leimert Park and his travels in Europe. That show is curated by Bridget R. Cooks, with an opening reception on October 20 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
An opening conversation follows at the Getty Center on Tuesday, October 27, with RSVP through the Getty’s calendar. The Getty lists all three runs through February 28. Art + Practice, which is closed on Sundays, gives Saturday, February 27, as the last day to see its show.
