Seven years ago Once Upon a Time in Hollywood had its U.S. premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre. On Friday, October 23, the film goes back to the same screen, and Quentin Tarantino comes with it. AFI Fest has added a special evening in which the Academy Award winning filmmaker sits down for a conversation after a screening of the film, the American Film Institute announced.

Before the Sequel

The timing is deliberate. AFI framed the night as a look back at Cliff Booth’s original misadventures ahead of The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, the new film directed by David Fincher from Tarantino’s script, with Brad Pitt back in the role. The Netflix film is scheduled for IMAX theaters on November 25 and for Netflix on December 23.

“As the world awaits The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, AFI is proud to celebrate where it all began,” AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale said. “And to do so with one of the greatest storytellers of our generation is a gift to all who love the movies.”

The Film

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood premiered in competition at Cannes on May 21, 2019, and reached theaters that July. It earned 10 Academy Award nominations and won two, Best Supporting Actor for Pitt and Best Production Design, and grossed more than $409 million worldwide.

The Festival

The Tarantino evening is part of the 40th AFI Fest, which runs October 21 to 25 at the TCL Chinese Theatres with 158 films. The festival opens with Laika’s Wildwood and closes with Being Heumann, with Phil Lord and Chris Miller serving as guest artistic directors.

Practical Details

The screening and conversation take place at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on Friday, October 23. AFI has not published a start time in its announcement. Festival passes and tickets are sold at fest.afi.com.
