So Bad It’s a Cult Classic, Patton Oswalt and Dana Gould Stage Plan 9 Live at Largo

Largo at the Coronet stages Plan 9 From Outer Space Live on Wednesday, October 14, with Patton Oswalt and Dana Gould leading a cast of comedians and actors through Ed Wood’s alien-invasion picture.
The lineup listed by both Largo and Time Out Los Angeles includes Dana Gould, Patton Oswalt, Janet Varney, Paul F. Tompkins, Laraine Newman, Kimmie Robertson, Jonah Ray and Aaron LaPlante. Largo adds “& more!” to the bill, so expect other performers to join them.
Time Out describes Wood’s tale of an alien invasion in the Valley as so bad that the B-movie “has of course inspired its own cult following,” and the live read leans into that reputation. The cast takes the film’s dialogue line by line, a few weeks before Halloween, and the Valley setting gives the night a local angle.
The format rewards a crowd that already knows the picture. A live read strips a film down to its script, so every stiff line lands with a cast of comedians, actors and writers delivering it straight, or close to it.
The evening is built the way Largo shows usually are. Will call opens at 6 p.m., doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. at the Coronet, 366 North La Cienega Boulevard. Largo lists tickets at $40 through See Tickets, while Time Out lists $50, so confirm the cost at the point of sale.
The reading lands in a busy month for the room. Brett Goldstein is trying out a new hour at Largo on October 18, and the club’s October calendar also holds Megan Mullally and her band Nancy And Beth on October 15 and Marc Maron on October 20.
