On the 1990s tours she played as a bassist, Melissa Auf der Maur carried a camera and asked for a roll of 35mm film at every venue. On Tuesday, October 20, she brings the results to Miracle Mile, in conversation with Garbage lead vocalist Shirley Manson at LACMA. Discover LA lists the talk among its upcoming highlights, and LACMA’s event page shows it as sold out.

The evening centers on My ‘90s Rock Photographs, drawn from the years Auf der Maur spent on the road with Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins. LACMA says her archive runs to more than 10,000 photographs, with candid moments involving Pavement, Sonic Youth and Drew Barrymore, and the book collects more than 200 of them.

DelMonico Books published the title this year, with text by Michael Stipe and critic Ann Powers among its contributors. NME reported in June that the 240 page hardback, made with the Art Gallery of Ontario, was due September 8, alongside an exhibition of the same name opening this autumn at the gallery in Toronto.

LACMA says the two will talk about the book, Auf der Maur’s years touring with two of the decade’s defining bands, and documenting rock history through her own lens. Afterward she will sign copies, which can be bought before or after the talk.

The program runs from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the East West Bank Commons as part of Third Weekends at LACMA, the museum’s monthly series of free and ticketed programs. It is presented alongside the exhibition Eileen Cowin, Between Panic and Paradise, which LACMA ties to the talk through the way both women use photography to record personal stories. Tickets were $22, or $18 for members, before the sellout. The Metro D Line now stops at Wilshire/Fairfax, right at the museum.
